Garbage disposal repair covers the grinder under your kitchen sink and the connections that feed it: the drain trap, the dishwasher hose and the electrical supply. When a disposal jams, leaks or backs water into the other side of a double sink, the kitchen stops working. Our 24/7 emergency line, (732) 466-1098, is open around the clock for kitchen floods and sink backups in Neptune.
We find out whether the fault is the disposal, the drain beyond it or a connection, because replacing a disposal does not fix a clogged pipe. Then we repair or replace, and you get a clear price before work starts.
Disposal humming but not spinning?
A humming disposal that will not turn is almost always jammed. The motor is getting power, but a spoon, bone, fruit pit or hardened scrap has locked the grinding plate. Running it longer only burns out the motor.
Technically this is a seized impeller, and the usual fix is to turn the plate backward by hand. Silence with no hum is a different problem, often a tripped overload button or a failed switch or cord. Three steps below cover the jam safely.
Clearing a jam without hurting yourself
Never put your hand into a disposal, even when it is off. Use these steps instead.
Cut power
Switch off the wall switch and unplug the unit, or turn off its breaker if it is hardwired.
Look with a flashlight
If you see the object, lift it out with tongs or pliers.
Turn the plate
Fit a hex key into the socket in the center of the underside and work it back and forth until it spins freely.
Press reset
Wait a few minutes, then press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit.
Test with water
Restore power, run cold water and flip the switch. If it hums again, stop and call us.
Water pouring from under the sink right now?
Shut the cold supply valves under the sink if you can reach them, then call (732) 466-1098. Turn the disposal off at the switch and unplug it. A leak from a disposal sits right above the cord and cabinet wiring.
If water has spread across the floor toward outlets or appliances, stay clear and do not touch the panel while standing in water. Photograph the damage and move items out of the cabinet. If only a few drops fall each minute, place a bucket and book a same-day appointment when available.
Sink backing up too?
A clogged drain beyond the disposal needs cleaning, not a new unit.
Symptom, likely cause, and fix or replace
The cause usually shows up in the symptom.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Repair or replace |
|---|---|---|
| Hums, will not turn | Jammed grinding plate | Repair, unless motor burned. |
| Silent, no hum | Tripped reset or dead switch | Repair, unless motor failed. |
| Leaks at top flange | Worn gasket or loose mount | Repair. |
| Leaks at bottom or side | Cracked housing or seal | Replace. |
| Drains slowly after grinding | Clog in trap or branch | Clear the drain, keep the unit. |
| Foul smell | Residue on shredder ring | Clean, rarely replace. |
| Loud grinding or rattle | Worn bearings or loose object | Replace if worn. |
Leaks from the housing itself cannot be sealed, so those units are replaced.
Double sinks, shared traps and the dishwasher line
On a double sink, the disposal usually discharges into a shared trap and drain with the second bowl. When that drain clogs, water from one side rises in the other. The cause is the pipe beyond the disposal, so a new unit will not fix it, though drain cleaning will.
The dishwasher hose also connects to the disposal inlet. When a new disposal is installed, the inlet has a knockout plug that must be removed or the dishwasher will not drain. Many drain-back complaints trace to a plug left in, or a hose with no high loop.
What never belongs in a disposal
Most repairs we see start with something that should not have gone down.
- Grease, fat and oil, which cool and coat the pipe beyond the unit.
- Coffee grounds in quantity, which pack into sludge.
- Bones, fruit pits and corn husks.
- Pasta, rice and potato peels, which swell into paste.
- Fibrous scraps such as celery, onion skins and artichoke.
- Eggshell fragments in large quantity and any non-food item.
- Chemical drain openers, which attack seals and the unit itself.
Kitchens here: seasonal homes, rentals and condos
Neptune includes single-family houses, townhomes, condos and multifamily buildings, and in many of them the kitchen drain connects to a shared stack. A disposal-related backup in a multifamily building can show up in a neighbor's sink, so report it to your property manager at once. Take photos and note which units are affected.
Homes used only part of the year behave differently. In neighboring Bradley Beach, 33.0 percent of housing units were vacant in the 2020 Census, a sign of seasonal use. A disposal left unused for months can rust, seize and leave a dry trap that lets sewer odor into the kitchen, so run water and test it on arrival.
The Township of Ocean Sewerage Authority warns that flushed wipes and grease damage its collection system in neighboring Ocean Township, and the same grease advice protects any kitchen drain in Neptune City or Neptune.
Repair or replace the disposal?
A jam, a reset or a loose flange is worth repairing. A cracked housing, a leak at the bottom, a motor that smells burned or a unit that has failed more than once is not. Replacement goes fastest when the mounting ring matches, and permit rules vary, so ask the Neptune Township construction office if you are changing fixtures. For a new kitchen layout, see plumbing installation.
What decides the price of a disposal repair
Prices differ because the faults do. We give a clear price before work starts.
Insurance may cover water damage from a sudden leak but usually not the disposal itself when it wears out.
Garbage Disposal Repair questions in Neptune, NJ
Yes. The 24/7 emergency line is open around the clock, so call (732) 466-1098 at any hour. We ask whether water is leaking, where it is going and whether anything electrical is wet.
While you wait, switch the disposal off, close the supply valves under the sink and photograph the damage. We do not promise a fixed arrival time.
On the bottom of the unit, a small red button. If it pops out after a jam, wait several minutes for the motor to cool before pressing it.
The shared drain beyond the disposal is partly clogged, so water takes the path of least resistance into the second bowl. Clearing the pipe is the fix, not changing the disposal.
No. Chemical openers can damage seals and housing and can splash when the unit is opened later. Tell us if you used any.
Permit rules vary, so ask the Neptune Township construction office. The township's 2018 fee schedule lists $27 per plumbing fixture or device, so confirm whether a swap counts and what the current fee is.
Landlords usually supply and maintain an installed disposal, unless the lease says otherwise or the damage was caused by misuse. Report it in writing with photos, and ask us for a written description of the cause.
